Trips: A Day on the Meramec River

Here is a report from Jason Edwards:
Matt McClure and I set out to fish the Meramec just outside the park on Saturday 11/4/17. We pulled into the lot to find we were the only ones and it stayed that way. We started our walk to the river and bumped into conservation agent Mike. He was driving in his truck and wanted to make sure we didn’t fish the park I guess. He let us in on a little secret, Browns have been stocked downstream from Cardiac Hill recently.
Well, the fishing was tough all day. I caught two browns on the Autumn Splendor WoolyBugger and Matt McClure landed  five on mostly P&P’s; a few browns and a few rainbows. The takes were extremely subtle. Not only did we just catch a few fish but it seemed that the amount of fish in the river was way down.  We fished from the curve all the way down to the second set of riffles and saw very few fish. It seems the over abundance of fish from the spring floods has passed.
Few other notes: if you head out in the next few weeks we saw several hunting camps on the river. Also we found a great eatery in St. James right by the railroad tracks, Missouri Pizza. Good food, give it a try.  Jason Edwards
