Service: FATC helps Scouts at Warren Levis

Three FATC brothers, Mike Bisaga, Steve Baker and Harold Bates, headed up to Camp Warren Levis in Godfrey Ill, to help with a Scout Merit Badge makeup day.  We were assigned to the Fishing/Fly Fishing area to help do whatever was needed.

When we arrived, we were asked to lead the Fly Fishing portion of the class, since the individual that was scheduled to lead the Fly FIshing portion, was not going to be there.  No problem, we can do that.

After reviewing the requirements that the Scouts needed to cover, we divided and conquered. We helped with the “classroom” portion as needed, then each took an area to work with the Scouts.

One of the Fly Fishing merit badge requirements is to tie 2 flies.  Steve Baker took this on and worked with the Scouts to get that done. He did a great job working with the youth and all Scouts successfully completed that requirement.

Another requirement is fly casting. Scouts need to be able to cast 30 feet and perform a roll cast.  Mike took this potion and worked with the kids, 3 at a time. All the Scouts picked up the casting very well and were successfully casting their flies out into the lake in no time.

The final requirement is to catch a fish on a fly rod.  Harold took on this task.  He worked with Scouts lakeside and provided additional instruction on casting and playing fish. It was very hot and the fish were not cooperating, however, fish were caught and everyone really enjoyed the day.

Keep an eye out for additional Scout events on the FATC calendar.  We can always use help and these events are very rewarding.
