Service: Cub Scouts Learn from the Best!

Cub Scout Launch Event October 1st, 2022

Once again FATC comes through to help out with the not so annual Cub Launch.  This event was put on hold for a couple of years due to Covid but it is now back.  The Flyfishers at the Crossing (FATC) provided 5 volunteers to help the Cub Scouts attract interested youth into the Scouting program.  Steve Baker, Ken Welter, Vernon Preston, Bob Hassett and Dan Staggenborg all met up with Michael Brand at Beaumont Scout Camp by 8am and had our station ready to go.

Our purpose for this event was to familiarize the young kids with Fly Fishing, i.e. the safety rules of the sport, how to cast a fly rod, and the conservation of our natural resources.  As the future scouts made their way through several booths and other events and reached our area they were excited to see what this was all about.

The volunteers would greet the kids and their parents and discuss the important rules for safety and conservation.  I’d like to say that they were all paying attention but their eyes were focused on the fly rods and what they would be doing next.  Kenny, I’d like to think that teaching your FATC students how to cast a fly rod is at least a little easier than teaching a 5-8 year old.  Some of the kids would easily get the hang of it, but once they figured out that they could actually catch those felt fish that was all they would focus on.  We even had some little sisters and brothers that wanted in on the action.  As usual the reward for helping these young boys and girls is the looks of excitement on their faces.  I would guess that all the volunteers enjoyed it as much as I did.  We were all blessed with perfect weather and the fellowship and rewards of community service.  If you haven’t been involved with any of our community service events you don’t know what you’re missing !
