      Grasshoppers:
With the winter season approaching don’t head out to the waters unprepared. Make sure you are ready for whatever the cold winter brings you when on the water. Here are a few tips I can pass along to make sure you have an enjoyable winter fishing experience.

      1. Dress appropriately! No cotton. Wear wool, fleece or the new wicking type materials on the market today. Many companies are now making excellent cold weather gear.
      2. Wear wool socks
      3. Wear a balaclava for warmth
      4. Wear gloves if you get cold hands but fishing gloves of wool or fleece. (Fingerless work great)
      5. Bring some hand warmers to put in your wader or jacket pocket.
      6. Wear “good” cold weather underwear under your waders NOT jeans – they’re cotton.
      7. Wear a water proof winter jacket – rain gear works for this.
      8. Get cold? – get out of the water and take a short walk to warm up.
      9. Don’t fish ALONE!! If you fall in, get dry clothes on immediately which means you need to bring an extra set of dry clothes!
      10. Bring a staff and wear it in case you have to cross fast moving water – the staff could prevent you from falling in.
      11. Bring a flask for a nip or two?? That’s your choice!

Does anyone else have some good ideas for winter fishing??

What I have learned about winter fishing. Take a complete change of clothes to fish in. The time I feel in, and it was like 22 degrees, I got the inside of my waders dry quick, but it took forever to get the rest of my stuff dry. If I had a complete change I could have been back to fishing in an hour. I followed all of the clothing recommendation Kenny posted above. Make use of that big ol Sierra bag, and take a change.
