The last three times I have been out fishing it has been tough. Oh we caught fish but not in the numbers that we should have for the winter catch and release season. So what’s the dee-lee-o? I think we need some rain – bad. We are way below normal for this time of year. The rivers are clearer, moving slower and more shallow than I have seen them in a long time. It won’t stop me from fishing but it is stopping me from catching. What do you guys think?? Anyone having good luck and why?

Well, I noticed fishing really picked up when MDC backed up their truck and stocked fish only 50 yards downstream.

But seriously….under these condition, I think we have to be even more deliberate when identifying potential fish holding locations and accurately casting so we can get a fly in the face of a fish likely holding there. And with this low clear water, after a couple casts, I think the fish spook. We have to make our casts count. My 2 cents.

Salt gills. I’m thinking from the last few trips. Grasshopper (aka..Salt gills) has passed his Sensei. It’s sounds like the old Sensei, is making excuses!? Just my humble 2 cents.?

      Oh Grasshopper Oldani,
An old oriental curse has been placed on your head by one who never makes excuses! When Salt Gills can take the fly from my hand then and only then will he be ready.

      The “old”?? Sensei

Now is the time to follow one of the teachings of the elders. Watch and learn what the fish will teach us. I found that fishing deeper holes, casting a little further and trying to keep movement to a minimum helps. One of the pictures on the trips page made me realize that the trout are having little trouble spotting us.

Good points Bill. With regards to your last comment, by chance are you referring to the color yellow?

Bright colors make you stand out from the trees and brush. Dressing in a banana suit certainly can’t help.

Doesn’t orange match the autumn leaves? I guess better than falling in and scaring all the trout in the entire river.

I prefer to think I woke the fish up so my fellow fishermen had a better day. That was an act of unselfish sacrifice by yours truly.
