What is volunteerism? What does it mean to be a volunteer? According to the dictionary a volunteer is one who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task – to freely offer to do something. Some volunteers are famous like the Vermont Volunteers from the Civil War of 1860s. Did you know Ben Franklin created the first volunteer fire department? Agatha Christie, the famous writer, became a nurse for the Red Cross.

Volunteering provides physical and mental rewards. It can reduce stress. Experts report that when you focus on someone other than yourself, it interrupts usual tension-producing patterns. It makes you healthier, your moods and emotions, like optimism, joy, and strengthens your immune system. So why don’t we do it more?

It seems many of us have lives that are just too busy. We pack so much in our lives with work stuff, family stuff, and play but very few of us take the time to give – to volunteer. I admire our fellowship the way our guys give and then give some more. Our guys are always willing to go that extra mile for those less fortunate. Yes, I always say that family is very important but check out what you are really doing with family. Is it just fluff? What if we took the time to volunteer and have our families volunteer with us? What memories would we make!

Now that Covid is hopefully behind us, our fellowship will get back to volunteering again. Give it a go. Or get your family involved in volunteerism. I am sure it will bring you and your family, and you and your fellowship brothers much closer together (and it’s healthy to do!)

Just to shine a little light on Kenny’s volunteerism post, I would like to invite all of are FATC members to take a close look at what is going on in our world. It’s time for all of us to pull our collective heads out of the sand and get back to being charitable citizens. Since Covid struck, our fellowship has been stalled. We are now to the point that we will be asking all our brothers to step up and as the opportunity arises jump on board and do your part to help out in any way you can.

Most of you are not familar with me. My name is Steve Baker and Kenny appointed me community serices chairman at our 2020 annual dinner. At that time it was easy to take over what Jim Craig had going with Ranken Jordan. Taking the kids fishing at Forest Park. It was very fun and rewarding. just ask anyone who participated. There were other opportunities that we were involved in with Missouri Conservation Department at Winter in the park, and working with the Boyscotts for their merrit badges. I’m sure there were other opportunities that I wasn’t even aware of. Well this all came to a screaming halt when Covid hit. It has been nearly 2 1/2 years now and things are starting to open up more and more. I will be visiting with Childrens Hopitals in the area to see if there are any opportunities for us to help out with patient activities, as this evolves I will be calling on our members to get involved. I look forward to the challenge and know it will be exciting to meet more of our membership as we help out our communities.

If anyone has or knows of any opportunities please contact me at swbaker50@gmail.com or 314-799-6113

With much respect for our place in life

      Your Community Service Chairman

      Thanks Steve,

Covid did slow us down some but it did not knock us out. We are now getting back on track. So wake up FATC!! Get off the recliner and get back out there where “life” truly is. I can’t say it enough but we, as men and brothers, need each other.  It is written that, “As Iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
