I am guilty of buying on the cheap. I found a deal on Amazon for tippet rings, 50 for $10.00.Wow what a deal and yeah you guessed it. They aren’t worth a nickle. I’ve wondered lately why I have been breaking off so often. So I put them to a test by tying them on to a piece of tippet with my normal knot and holding onto the ring with a hook and pulling on the tippet. The tippet would break every time. So I assumed the ring was cutting the tippet. But then I thought maybe my tippet is old, so how do you know. I’ve read you can test your tippet by tying a overhand knot in a piece and pulling on both ends to check the strength of the tippet. Ive done both of these tests and I think I have a double problem. I know the solution is simple, toss the rings and tippet and by new. Problem solved.

If anyone has experienced the same problem or just wants to throw in your two cents feel free. I can always use tips and advice.

I’m sitting in the Denver airport headed to Bozeman!! Sorry, just had to say that.

Cheap never pays. Buy good tippet from a good company. Tippet should not go bad unless you’ve had it for five years and left it in the sun! Tippet rings – same. Buy cheap then the “nicks” will get ya.
Because you fish as much as you do I can’t see how you would have old tippet, especially when you should be using it on every trip. What tippet do you buy? Are your knots tied correctly and well (spit on them).  Get good tippet rings and you shouldn’t lose them. If your breakage is at the ring – good knots, check your leader too (3x no less that 4x leader).

long story short don’t lose that 23 inch Brown because you went cheap. Gotta catch my plane now – bye!!

Steve, I have had the same dilemma with tippet rings. Just to elaborate more on everything Kenny said. I noticed the tippet rings that are nickel/silver are rounded better than the tippet rings in black in my observations. I tested the nickel & black tippet rings and definitely the black tippet rings have sharper roundness causing the tippet to cut/break. I’m assuming the different types of material used to make the tippet rings. Again, it’s not a scientific proof just my observation. Another option is to use micro swivels. Just my 2 cents worth.

      Tightlines.
