FYI, Orvis has premiered a Euro Nymphing video with George Daniel and Tom Rosenbauer. If you are interested in Euro Nymphing this is a good one to watch. It last about 48 minutes not nearly as intense as the 2 Modern Nymphing videos put out by Devin Olsen and Lance Egan. Although, they have a new 3rd one out or will be out shortly. I found the Orvis video full of useful tips. For instance, the Orvis tippet knot vs the double surgeon knot for hanging a dropper fly off of.  Also, a bit of time spent on casting are lobbing. Take a look if interested. I found it useful. But then I like the Euro style of fishing, but then I hate split shot.

Thanks for sharing Tim. I’m just learning the Euro/Tightline technique. I am like a sponge now trying to learn this technique.  The orvis premier will definitely help with my learning curve.

BTW…I like your idea of reviewing the euro nymphing class mentioned to Kenny at the last zoom fly tying session. We need to lobby together for Kenny to repeat his euro class on zoom!

Hay Mike, One of the best sites I found for learning the euro method is Troutbitten, if you haven’t looked at Troutbitten take a peek. Kenny mentioned this site Thursday night. It is an in depth look at euro nymphing. Actually, the administrator Domenick Swentosky of Trourbitten, refers to Euro Nymphing as the Mono Rig. The first post of his that I read was, Why Fly Line Sucks. Got my attention. Take a look. If you are really interested in a new method of catching fish you will spend a week or more reading his stuff.

      I hate split shot.

Thanks Tim for the information about the Troutbitten Mono Rig. I have read many articles written by Domenick, but never much about the Mono Rig. His mono rig technique is very interesting and makes sense to me. We might have a new forum topic Euro Nymphing technique vs Mono Rig technique. Both techniques are similar but, the mono rig seems more versatile. The mono rig you’re able to fish dry flies, streamers, use of indicators, split shot, etc… using only monofilament line. Then again you can probably do the same with the euro rig, just making a longer leader. I have copied a link from the Troutbitten site, if anyone interested in the difference between euro nymphing and the mono rig.

Euro Nymphing and the Mono Rig

Who needs expensive fly lines just use monofilament.? I could’ve saved spending $70-$80 on fly line. I’m needing a new 4wt fly line on my 4wt rod. The line is shot. I’m thinking about forgetting buying new fly line and using my 4wt rod as a mono rig set up. I know the mono rig probably wouldn’t interest everyone, especially the fly fishing purists. But, the mono rig intrigue me. Tim you introduced to me other fly fishing techniques to think about! ?

Tightlines on whatever method you choose.

Ok, don’t get hung up with the terms; Euro nymphing and mono rig. They are essentially the same thing. Yes, if you do euro-nymphing how the “pros” do it, i.e. no indicator, no split shot, etc.. it is a “specific” way of fishing. But, you can fish long leader/mono rig/euro nymphing techniques anyway you want. Use split shot if you need it. Use an indicator if you need it. Use long mono lines if you need it.  Domenic Swentosky lives and fishes in Pennsylvannia where rivers are not as “wide” as, let’s say, Colorado. So to say you don’t need “fly line” is a misnomer. How you fly fish depends on where you fish and the conditions you are presented.  If you fish the small streams in Pennsylvannia then you can get away with using the “mono rig”.  BTW, Joe Humphreys is also from Pennsylvannia. I’d like to see someone cast a streamer 60 -80 feet on the Colorado river without fly line. Just a thought….
