I was wondering: Have you ever thought about how life is like a river?

The river of life is ever changing. Sometimes it’s wide and slow; sometimes it’s turbulent. Often it’s not as it appears from only observing the surface. It can be deeper than it appears to be. The current and its speed are not the same from the surface to the riverbed. We tend to think the action is always at the surface level, but most of the time it’s much deeper–near the rocky bottom.

If we live only at the surface level, we miss out on the real action. We miss out on deep friendships, lasting relationships, food for our soul, resting places and more.

What’s the answer? We need to learn to mend, and sometimes we need to recast.

It’s a lot like fly fishing. If you don’t learn to mend, you’re not going to catch many trout. And sadly, you’ll be oblivious to what you’re missing.

I was wondering: Do you think your life needs mending? If so, in what areas? And what do you plan to do about it? If you don’t mend or recast, can you really expect improvement or a life of significance? Can you really expect to have a positive influence on your family and those around you? What kind of legacy can you expect if you don’t mend or recast?

It’s not too late. Last autumn, roughly 30 FATC guys attended a seven-week FATC study on the book HalfTime. At least three-fourths of those guys then joined small study groups of about 4 or 5 guys as an aid in their quest to bring significance to their lives. These fellow FATC guys aren’t that different from you, and with God’s help and the help of their FATC brothers they are mending and recasting their lives. They aren’t just letting the river of life pass them by.

By the way, those of us who have been broken by divorce, financial and business failures and job losses have become really good at mending and recasting. In the river of life, if what you’re doing isn’t working for you, maybe you don’t need a new fly or a new rod; maybe you need to learn to mend and to recast.

I was wondering: What are your thoughts on this subject? I hope some of the 30 guys from the 2021 FATC HalfTime Study respond on the FATC FORUM and share their experiences and their perspective. And if you weren’t in the study, but have interest in perhaps joining a possible 2022 FATC HalfTime Study this fall, please let me know. We could all use a little mending in our lives. As our slogan reads: It isn’t just about the fly fishing…

Probably the number one thing that guys don’t do properly when fly fishing thus preventing them from catching more fish is the drift. To get the perfect drift you have to mend as the current takes your flies and indicator downstream. As in life we definitely need to mend – as the currents continually change each location we decide to fish so to our life is continually changing just like the currents. A better mend in life will keep you on course when life gets tough.

      Just my two cents.
