Trips: The New Javelina Fly???

Bill Byington and Steve Baker went to Montauk on Wednesday July 21. We met up with Don Varner who had gone down the day before and reported a good days fishing with nice clear water. But that was not to be for Wednesday. As we walked the trail to find our favorite spot we could see the water was off color and with a closer look realized that it wasn’t just off color but very stained and almost muddy. That wasn’t about to discourage us and we all had a great day on the water with all of us in double digits on the fish count. The San Juan worm, crackle backs and mop flies in orange and pink and several variations of nymphs including Kenny’s hair of the dog fly and a new variation for me called a “Peccary Jig” nymph. It is made from the hair of a Javelina which is a small South American pig. Tied with a red bead and red hot spot it brought at least 6 to 8 fish to the net. It turned out to be a great day. We did find out later that the reason for the murky water was caused by a crew removing a tree that had fallen across Pigeon Creek just above where the spring flows in and the heavy equipment they were using really stirred up the sediment. We ended the day with dinner at Hicks BBQ and Don even order the Ory spud. All in all it turned out to be an A+ day.
