Trips: Summer on The Meramec

Trip Report – 7/5/21

Brian Yost and Mark Skrob headed to Maramec Springs for the day.  Weather, water levels and fishing were great!  There was some residual holiday campers/rafters/anglers.  The kayak traffic was manageable, but we often had to check behind us as we were almost run over a few times without much warning.  We called it the ‘Kayak Hatch’.  Brian and Mark both got on a number of large rainbows earlier on.  Brian used a scud/P&P combo and soft hackle.  The only flies in Mark’s box were cracklebacks that he ties, in various colors and sizes.  He uses a sinking line and strips it in.  I have to admit, Mark is extremely successful with his one-fly method.  As the day went on and the further we waded down the river, the fishing became a bit harder.  We were still able to land some nice rainbows, but it was much harder as the sun/heat became much stronger.  Brian continued to find fish on a soft hackle in the riffles while Mark found fish in the larger holes.  They finished their day with a few burgers at the Public House Brewing Co in St. James.
