Trips: It Rained Then Stopped

Monday, March 19th had patchy rain in the forecast – but that doesn’t stop the FATC.  Six headed to Montauk State park to practice catch and release. Rudy Dodorico, Jim Craig and friend Scott Payne, Paul Schneider, Bill Byington and Kenny Klimes met and drove together to fish for rainbows on the Current river.  The park was fairly empty and the guys started in the fly fishing only area.  Plenty of fish were caught and lost both in the morning and the afternoon.  Most of the rainbows were in the 11-14 inch range with Rudy catching the big fish of the day – maybe 18 inches?  The best flies seemed to be pheasant tail nymphs (with an orange hot spot), soft hackles, woolybuggers, small red san juan worms, the abomination (large stonefly looking nymph), and the chocolate covered cherry midge.

It was a fun trip with plenty of guys and laughter throughout the day.  Although Bill just had the tendency to take things just one step to far – had to be there.  Yes, it did rain – hard – for about an hour but we kept fishing.  All the weak ones left the river for us.  Kenny practiced his Czech nymphing because he is Czech you know…. There are a lot of “new holes” at Montauk after the flood a month ago so go check them out.  No one fell in and that’s a good thing.  The day ended with Mexican food in Sullivan and new friendships made.
