Trips: Cardiac Attack

With the state parks closed for the next two weeks, fishing doesn’t stop.  Kenny Klimes and Lou Forbringer went to fish the Cardiac Hill area this past Friday (2/16).  Lou had never fished this area before so Kenny became his guide.  Kenny warned him that we won’t catch a lot of fish but if we get say 10 trout between us that it would be a good day.  Boy, was he ever off his prediction.  The two pulled into the net almost 30 trout and missed many more than that.  As Lou kept repeating over and over, “this was an awesome day of fishing”.

The two started up stream at the beginning of the three runs that are back to back and worked their way downstream to the Suicide Hill area.  Yes, it was a FULL day of fishing for sure.  We threw mohair leeches and woolybuggers in the beginning. Then switched to a little euro nymphing.  Both techniques caught fish.  Then we saw some browns taking insects in the film layer and went to attack them.  Lou tied on a soft hackle with a Barr’s emerger trailer and did very well. He said he never fishes small flies but after his success he will do it more often.

It was a great day (as Lou said) and I was very surprised how active the browns were.  The browns were not big, with fish caught in the 14-8 inch range.  Most browns caught were about 11 inches long but they fought hard.  After a full day of fishing we still had to walk the dreaded Cardiac Hill to get back to the car.  As I told Lou, “Don’t look up and put one foot in front of the other.”  Of course, we made it to the car and capped the day off with some good Mexican food.

Cardiac Hill is always a beautiful place to fish BUT ALWAYS check the water level charts on our web site (Education section) before you go so you don’t end up having to turn around when you arrive at the river!!
