Trips: The Bennett Gang

Here is a trip report from Jeff Layton on his trip with his son, Nick, Sid Aslin and a few of his son’s buddies.  Looks like they just missed the big car crash!

Kenny, we had a great time at Bennett Spring last weekend. Sid, Nick Layton (son),Kris Watson, and Jimmy McMullen (a couple of Nick’s buddies) all went. We got there about 12:30 pm on Friday, checked into our cabin, and fished for a few hours. Fishing was kind of tough for me. Sid had a good day on Saturday (caught 12 or so), my son’s buddy Kris caught 2 solid 2 1/2 to 3 pounder Rainbows, one right after the other, just down from the spring. My son Nick caught a beautiful rainbow (about 3 pounder), just below the 1st waterfall in zone 1. Nicks buddy Jimmy had a good day on Sunday with 12 or so fish caught. The hot fly’s were: Olive Leeches, Red Midge, Red with black zebra midge, purple zebra midge, Red Ass wet fly, Blonde Leeches, and White bead head jig. We had No hot water at all in the cabin all weekend. Took an ICE COLD shower on Saturday night. Sid did as well (not at the same time though). Friday and Saturday were nice and not that cold, but Sunday morning was very cold (in the teens). We only fished until about 11:30 am on Sunday and left at about 1:30 pm. We started driving home right when the ice and snow started happening. There were cars and trucks slid off the highway all over the place. We got stopped on the highway 44 at Rolla, due to a 17 car pile up that happened about 10-12 cars in front of us. God was with us on this trip, that’s for sure.

  • Except for the water heater not working in cabin # 6 we had a great time! I left earlier than most of the other guys so I missed the wreck by just a few miles as I did see a lot of emergency vehicles going the opposite direction coming home on 44.
