What are your thoughts on buying used gear online? I am talking premium rods and reels mostly but everything else could be considered.

      Bill,

I look at used gear every time I want something, which is everyday. I think in terms of what is secure, safe and if the seller will live up to his word. I look at Ebay. There the seller has a rating, if less than 99% I will look else where. There is a site, “Fly Fishing, Buy, Sell or Trade.” It is self policing. If someone tries to make a purchase and the seller fails to follow up on the deal, the buyer will make a post ripping the seller. Everyone then knows. Plus, if you use Pay Pal you have recourse. Then there is “Upcountry Sport Fishing on the Farmington River.” This is a fly shop, pretty much all high end stuff, the pricing looks fair. Never bought from it, but I would. Then there is the WWW. The world is your oyster.

      Bill,
Believe it or not but I just bought a reel last week. It is a Lamson Litespeed Micra 5 reel from Sierra Trading Post (I really like Lamson litespeed reels – my second one). It normally runs $340 but I paid $199. It is factory second but when I opened it up everything was perfect (brand new) except I saw a little (very little) nick on the center piece of the reel. Something I would put into it the first day I use it. Basically new reel for 45% off. They sell all kinds of fly fishing gear. It’s usually the stuff that was taken over by a new design or new packaging, etc. Check them out – at SierraTradingPost.com

      Bill,
I have purchased from Sierra Trading Post. Kenny is right, good deals, especially if you can find a discounted item or a coupon. Not used stuff, but new or seconds.

I have bought a reels, waders, flies, clothes and miscellaneous type gear from STP. Rods from Trident and frequently visit The upcountry site. I should have been more specific. I meant buying rods and reels from an individual. I was wondering if anyone had gone down this road.

There are FATC guys that sell things from time to time. I would trust them, unless his name is Judas, then Kenny would send someone from Chicago to make the deal good. I think a rod is pretty easy to judge the quality, unless it is bamboo. Reels, I am not sure what to look for. Outward appearance for wear, but then there is the drag mechanism. Not sure what to lookout for. Another thing would be to ask if the reel is CNN machined. Then the reel would have some tight tolerances. That still does not answer the question about the drag.

      Bill,
I’m leery about buying on sites from individuals (like Ebay). Ask Mike Walton about doing that. He bought some waders for a great price that were only worn twice by the guy’s grandfather. First time he worn them they filled up with so much water he couldn’t even walk. 🙂

I have purchased a like new Sage ZXL through an EBay seller. I suggest contacting the seller and asking additional questions especially on higher price items. In my case by contacting the seller I was able to find out that the rod was in excellent condition, more photos were sent to me and the rod had only been used a couple times.

      Bob,
Yes, there is a way to sell your used gear through the FATC. Go to our “members only” calendar and select the last day of the month (this way the item stays in the calendar for the month). Just like you would add a trip you select the “calendar – select or type” then select the “gear sales” gray button. Type in your info and save.

I know, how do I get to the members only calendar??? UGH!!!!
