I have a TFO Professional Series 2 9ft 5wt. I usually fish in and outside the parks for trout. Doing some home work on which and what size line to buy has me scratching my head. Sounds like rod builders are building their rods up a size so a 5wt rod is really more like a 6wt and now line are manufactures are filing suit, so do I get a 5wt or 6wt line? What brand? Model? I have been fishing a Bass Pro Hobbs Creek combo for the last couple years and just picked up the TFO from a friend.

      Thanks,
      Rick Doerr

      Hi Rick,

Good question. I’m sure everyone has a personal preference. I would go with a 5w fly line. I am not familiar with the TFO Professional Series 2 rod. Is it a fast action, medium-fast, slow action rod? I know something else to confuse us. I was advised that if it is a fast action rod to go with a heavier line like a Rio Grand line. If it’s another action, you can’t go wrong with Rio Gold line.

I have included a link below from Rio on line- selector for your specific rod. It is helpful information but, gives you more to scratch your head about.?

I look forward hearing from the more experience Flyfishers. I hope this is helpful for you.

      Take care.

      Thanks for the info.
The rod is a Medium Fast Action

I have a TFO Pro Special and have had other similar rods and the RIO Gold or another similar weight line is what you want. I think Cortland has a line that is true to weight and AirFlo Bandit would work as well. The Bandit However is 120 long and you either cut it down or get a larger reel if you want the backing capacity. Rio Gold Is a little heavier than the standard lines but is still true to weight line, the Rio Grand is a full line weight heavier and I don’t think you would like it on that rod. The best thing you could do is take your rod to either Feathercraft or Hargroves and try out different lines like the Gold Or Scientific Anglers Expert Distance. Throw in The SA MPX just to try a half line heavier line to see if you like it.

My suggestion would be to go with your rod in hand to Feather-Craft. Take your reel also. Feather Craft has reels set up with different weighted fly lines and will let you cast them in their side yard. That way you will know for certain what line will cast best. They will fill your reel for you with backing and the line you chose. Of course you gotta pay, but the use of their reels and lines is free. Not all fly line are equal. One 5 weight to another may weigh more in the head or belly compared to its brother from a different manufacture. That 4 wt. Winston I won at the raffle a few years ago works better with a 4 wt. Scientific Anglers Sharkwave than it did with a Rio Gold. Just a tad heaver I think. But it is a textured line and it makes a little noise.

      Rick,
I’ve thrown a lot of lines. To me the best all around line for trout is the RIO Gold. But get a 5wt line for your 5wt TFO rod. The only time you should think about going up a size is if you fish a fast action rod. Then again not all fast rods are equal. For example, A “fast” Sage rod is faster than a Winston “fast” rod. The TFO you have is Medium fast so don’t go a size up.

Woolybugger Fly Company sells us RIO Gold line for 20% discount if you use our FATC code you were sent when joining.

Tim’s idea of going to Feathercraft to cast different lines is also an excellent idea.

So, Rick how did you resolve your fly line issue? What did you dress your TFO PRO II with. I have the same rod I have Rio Gold 5wt. line on it. Works great.

Thank for recommendations, I ended up getting the Rio Gold 5Wt from Woolybugger Fly Company. I used it yesterday and it worked very well.
