Many will fish stonefly patterns by swinging the flies. This is a good technique but try dead drifting them under an indicator next time. Stoneflies are terrible swimmers and once they break free from their “homes” they actually tumble through the water until they can grab on to something again (watch the video on stoneflies in our “Education – Bug section – Stoneflies” on our web site). Dead drifting your stoneflies (rubberlegged stonefly pattern works well for this) is a great way to “imitate” this tumbling motion that the stonefly goes through when he isn’t attached to anything. Try it and be ready for that indicator to go “out of sight”!
Tip: when tying your stoneflies weight them by using lead wire wrap.

The stonefly under an indicator has been effective on the Meramec River for the last couple weeks. You got to be deep – another reason to fish it under and indicator (with ample weight).
